Lewis Hamilton has urged Ferrari to learn from its costly Mexican Grand Prix disappointment, insisting that individual battles must never come at the expense of the team, while reaffirming his commitment to the Scuderia.

Hamilton has delivered a firm message to Ferrari following the Mexican Grand Prix, calling for greater accountability after a first-lap battle with team-mate Charles Leclerc contributed to the team’s failure to convert a promising weekend into victory.

The seven-time world champion finished second behind Max Verstappen but was left frustrated by the circumstances that allowed Red Bull to capitalise on Ferrari’s early advantage.

Hamilton and Leclerc fought for position during the opening lap, with their contest at Turn 4 allowing Verstappen to move between the two Ferraris. Leclerc subsequently received a five-second penalty for gaining an advantage off the track.

The outcome proved particularly disappointing for Hamilton, who believes Ferrari had the performance to secure a much stronger result.

Having expressed his frustration immediately after the race, the 41-year-old subsequently addressed the situation in a social media message, acknowledging the team’s progress while emphasising the need to make the most of its opportunities.

Hamilton Puts Ferrari Frustration Into Perspective

Before addressing Ferrari’s disappointment, Hamilton paid tribute to Andrea Kimi Antonelli, who secured his maiden Formula 1 world championship in Mexico.

The Mercedes driver finished third to become the youngest world champion in the sport’s history at 20 years old, a milestone Hamilton was particularly pleased to witness following his own lengthy association with the team.

Hamilton congratulated Antonelli on his achievement and reflected on the significance of watching the young Italian reach the pinnacle of the sport.

He also acknowledged the celebrations at Mercedes, encouraging Antonelli to enjoy the moment with his family and maintain the passion that had carried him to the title.

However, Hamilton’s attention soon returned to Ferrari and the opportunity that had slipped away.

“Our weekend was full of difficulties. We had to overcome many obstacles, but our mechanics and engineers did an incredible job,” Hamilton explained.

“We have made enormous progress together this year, and those improvements have required considerable effort, both at the circuit and back at the factory.”

For Hamilton, that collective effort made the disappointment in Mexico particularly difficult to accept.

“That is precisely why losing a victory that seemed within our reach hurts so much. We have to take every opportunity that comes our way. It is incredibly frustrating, and I cannot pretend otherwise.”

Hamilton Demands Lessons From Costly Team-Mate Battle

Although Hamilton stopped short of directly blaming Leclerc, his message underlined the responsibilities that come with representing Ferrari.

The two drivers have been encouraged to compete, but their opening-lap contest in Mexico demonstrated how quickly an internal battle can affect the team’s overall result.

Hamilton acknowledged that racing against a team-mate is an inevitable part of Formula 1, while making clear that the interests of the wider organisation cannot be overlooked.

“We are all here to race, and we all want to win. Fighting is necessary, but when that battle costs the team, we have to be honest and learn from it.”

His comments followed criticism from Ferrari team principal Frédéric Vasseur, who expressed his dissatisfaction with the drivers’ conduct and the consequences for those working behind the scenes.

Hamilton shared that broader concern, highlighting the expectations placed on Ferrari and the work required to put both cars in contention.

“I know what it takes to give ourselves an opportunity like that. I know the standards the team sets, the standards I set for myself and what the fans expect. Everyone deserves to see us at our best and see us winning.”

The British driver nevertheless maintained that Ferrari could accommodate two fiercely competitive drivers without allowing their individual ambitions to undermine the team’s objectives.

“We can push each other to our limits while still respecting our responsibilities to everyone who makes it possible for us to be on that grid.”

Hamilton Reaffirms Commitment to Ferrari

Despite the disappointment and growing scrutiny surrounding Ferrari’s handling of its drivers, Hamilton made clear that his belief in the team remains unchanged.

The seven-time champion insisted he would continue giving everything to the project, describing his responsibility to help Ferrari return to winning ways as an ongoing commitment.

“I will continue to give absolutely everything I have. My belief in this team has not changed, nor has my responsibility to help put things right.”

Hamilton also appealed to Ferrari’s supporters to remain behind the team, stressing that he still sees considerable potential in what the Scuderia can achieve.

“Keep supporting us. My journey with this team is only just beginning, and we still have so much to accomplish.”

His message leaves Ferrari with a clear challenge as the season continues.

The team’s progress has brought it back into contention for victories, but the Mexican Grand Prix exposed the consequences of allowing its two drivers’ ambitions to collide at a crucial moment.

For Hamilton, the priority is not to prevent competition between team-mates, but to ensure that Ferrari learns from the experience and converts future opportunities into results.
