Esteban Ocon will not race for Haas again in 2026 after the American team confirmed his removal from its line-up for the remainder of the Formula 1 season, with Brazilian prospect Rafael Câmara set to make his Grand Prix debut at Interlagos this weekend.
The announcement brings an end to weeks of uncertainty surrounding Ocon’s position following his unexpected replacement during the Mexico City Grand Prix weekend.
Haas has now confirmed that the Frenchman will not return to its race line-up this year, while Câmara, who had already secured a full-time seat for 2027, will make his first Formula 1 appearance alongside Oliver Bearman at the São Paulo Grand Prix.
Haas Confirms Ocon Will Not Return in 2026
Ocon’s position became uncertain in Mexico after Haas withdrew him from the remainder of the weekend following the opening two free practice sessions.
The French driver had been involved in a tense radio exchange with race engineer Laura Müller over tyre selection and the team’s planned running programme. Other reported developments behind the scenes subsequently preceded the decision to replace him with reserve driver Ryō Hirakawa.
Haas has not publicly explained the circumstances that led to Ocon’s removal.
Hirakawa went on to deliver an encouraging performance in Mexico, ultimately securing a championship point after penalties imposed on other competitors affected the final classification.
Although discussions subsequently took place between Ocon and Haas, they failed to resolve the situation, with team principal Ayao Komatsu now confirming that the Frenchman will not return to competitive duties this season.
“We have informed Esteban that he will not return to a race seat with TGR Haas F1 Team this season,” Komatsu said.
“Decisions of this nature are never taken lightly, as was already the case in Mexico. However, we believe, both now and then, that this is the best decision for the future of the team.”
Komatsu declined to provide further details about the discussions that followed the Mexico City Grand Prix.
“The conversations between the team and Esteban remain an internal matter. We will continue to respect the private nature of those discussions.”
The statements confirm Ocon’s absence from the remainder of Haas’s 2026 racing programme, although the team has not provided a detailed public account of the events behind the decision.
Câmara Handed Home Grand Prix Debut
Haas has meanwhile turned to 21-year-old Rafael Câmara for the São Paulo Grand Prix, handing the Brazilian an opportunity to make his Formula 1 debut in front of his home crowd.
A member of the Ferrari Driver Academy and the current Formula 2 championship leader, Câmara had already been confirmed as a Haas race driver for the 2027 season.
His promotion to a Grand Prix seat therefore comes earlier than originally planned.
“We have chosen Rafael Câmara to race alongside Ollie Bearman at the São Paulo Grand Prix,” Komatsu confirmed.
The Haas team principal highlighted Câmara’s performance during a previous test in an older Formula 1 car as an important indication of his readiness.
“He excelled during his TPC session in August. We therefore know what he is capable of, and we are looking forward to welcoming him to the team this weekend for his Formula 1 debut in the VF-26.”
Câmara will make his first competitive appearance in Formula 1 at Interlagos, one of the sport’s most established circuits, with the added attention that comes with a Brazilian driver competing on home soil.
The opportunity also represents a significant acceleration of his career, moving directly from a Formula 2 title campaign into a Formula 1 race seat.
Haas Yet to Confirm Plans Beyond Brazil
Despite Câmara’s early promotion, Haas has stressed that his participation is currently confirmed only for the São Paulo Grand Prix.
The Brazilian still has commitments in Formula 2, with rounds scheduled in Qatar and Abu Dhabi as the championship approaches its conclusion.
He could, however, abandon those remaining appearances to continue gaining Formula 1 experience through the final races of 2026.
No decision has yet been announced on whether he will remain alongside Bearman beyond the Brazilian weekend.
For Haas, the immediate priority is the São Paulo Grand Prix, where Câmara will begin his Formula 1 career earlier than anticipated.
For Ocon, the team’s confirmation closes the possibility of a return to its race line-up before the end of the season, following a breakdown in relations whose full circumstances remain undisclosed.
