Haas Confirms Rafael Câmara for 2027 as Esteban Ocon Loses F1 Seat

Haas has officially confirmed that Brazilian rising star Rafael Câmara will join its Formula 1 driver lineup for the 2027 season, replacing Esteban Ocon in a significant reshuffle at the American team.

The 21-year-old has signed a multi-year agreement and is expected to partner Oliver Bearman, although the British driver’s continuation with Haas beyond 2026 has yet to be formally announced.

Currently leading the Formula 2 championship, Câmara will graduate to Formula 1 following an impressive rise through the junior categories, backed by the Ferrari Driver Academy.

His promotion leaves Ocon facing an uncertain future, with the Frenchman now needing to secure another opportunity to remain on the Formula 1 grid.

Câmara Secures Formula 1 Promotion After Impressive Junior Career

Câmara’s appointment follows a remarkable sequence of results that has established him as one of the most promising young drivers in international motorsport.

The Brazilian won the Formula Regional European Championship in 2024 before claiming the Formula 3 title in 2025.

He has carried that momentum into his rookie Formula 2 campaign, securing three feature race victories and five pole positions.

With two rounds potentially remaining in Qatar and Abu Dhabi, subject to their confirmation on the calendar, Câmara leads Nikola Tsolov by seven points and remains in contention for a third consecutive championship.

His performances have convinced Haas that he is ready to make the transition to Formula 1.

Câmara Expresses Gratitude to Haas and Ferrari

Speaking following the announcement, Câmara described his promotion as a defining moment in his career.

“I am very happy to join Haas F1 Team as a Formula 1 driver. This is an important step in my career, and I want to thank Gene Haas and Ayao Komatsu for the confidence they have placed in me,” Câmara said.

“I am also very grateful to the Ferrari Driver Academy for its support and everything it has contributed to my development over the years.”

The Brazilian acknowledged the challenge ahead as he prepares to compete at the highest level of single-seater racing.

“There will be an enormous amount to learn. I am looking forward to working closely with the team, understanding the car and continuing to develop as a driver.”

Portimão Test Helps Convince Haas Management

Beyond his junior racing achievements, Câmara strengthened his case for promotion during a private test at Portimão, Portugal, as part of Haas’s programme using previous-generation Formula 1 machinery.

Team principal Ayao Komatsu was particularly impressed by the Brazilian’s ability to adapt quickly and work effectively with the engineering team.

“I am really excited to sign such an exceptional young talent as Rafael Câmara,” Komatsu said.

“His results in the junior categories are impressive. Even in his first Formula 2 season, he demonstrated remarkable speed in challenging conditions, particularly during qualifying in Monaco and Montreal.”

Komatsu emphasised that Câmara’s performance in Portugal revealed qualities extending beyond outright pace.

“He showed us much more than just raw speed. Despite having limited time to familiarise himself with the car, he was able to create the conditions necessary to get the best out of himself. It was very impressive.”

The assessment suggests Haas sees Câmara not only as a fast young prospect but also as a driver capable of contributing to the team’s technical development.

Gene Haas Draws Comparisons With Oliver Bearman

Team owner Gene Haas believes the team’s experience with Oliver Bearman demonstrates the potential benefits of recruiting young drivers developed through Ferrari’s junior programme.

“We have seen with Ollie Bearman that young drivers coming through the Ferrari Driver Academy can be very well prepared and make an immediate positive impact on a team,” Haas said.

Although Bearman’s place in the 2027 lineup has not yet been officially confirmed, he is expected to remain with the American outfit.

That would give Haas an entirely young driver pairing, with both competitors having progressed through Ferrari’s development system.

The arrangement could also attract interest from Ferrari as the Italian manufacturer evaluates its longer-term driver options.

Both Bearman and Câmara are viewed as potential future candidates for a Ferrari race seat, although no decision regarding such a move has been announced.

Ocon Faces Uncertain Future Following Haas Decision

Câmara’s arrival has immediate consequences for Esteban Ocon, whose departure from Haas now leaves his Formula 1 future unresolved.

The experienced French driver must explore alternative opportunities if he is to remain on the grid in 2027.

His replacement represents a significant change in Haas’s driver strategy, with the team placing its confidence in emerging talent rather than retaining an established Grand Prix winner.

For Câmara, the announcement marks the culmination of a rapid progression through the junior categories and the beginning of preparations for his Formula 1 debut.

For Haas, it represents another step towards building a younger lineup with strong connections to Ferrari’s driver development programme.

And for Ocon, the challenge is now to find a new seat in an increasingly competitive driver market.
