Bortoleto Welcomes Câmara as Brazil Doubles Its F1 Presence

Gabriel Bortoleto has welcomed childhood friend Rafael Câmara’s Formula 1 debut with Haas at the Brazilian Grand Prix, marking the first time since 2016 that two Brazilian drivers will feature on the grid.

However, the Audi driver remains determined to put his difficult home race of 2025 behind him while helping his team close the gap to Haas in the Constructors’ Championship.

The 2026 Brazilian Grand Prix represents a significant occasion for Brazilian motorsport, with Bortoleto and Câmara preparing to compete in front of their home crowd at Interlagos.

For Bortoleto, Câmara’s arrival is particularly meaningful. The two drivers have known each other since childhood, having progressed through the junior categories before reaching Formula 1.

Although delighted to see another Brazilian on the grid, Bortoleto insisted that Câmara’s promotion was entirely justified by his achievements.

“I actually knew it was going to happen, so when I heard the news, I was obviously happy for him because, as I’ve said several times this week, he fully deserves it,” Bortoleto explained.

“Rafa and I have known each other since we were probably eight years old, something like that, and he’s a great guy. He’s very talented.

“He won F3. Now he’s probably going to win F2. He’s leading the championship, so his place in Formula 1 is completely deserved. And there’s no better way to arrive in F1 than with a record like that.”

Câmara’s Formula 3 title and his position at the top of the Formula 2 standings have strengthened his credentials ahead of his first Formula 1 appearance.

Nevertheless, Bortoleto acknowledged the considerable challenge awaiting his compatriot, particularly with his debut taking place at his home Grand Prix.

Bortoleto Warns of the Pressure Facing Câmara

Making a Formula 1 debut is demanding under any circumstances, but doing so at Interlagos brings additional expectations.

Câmara will have to familiarise himself with a new car while managing the attention of the Brazilian media and supporters.

Bortoleto believes his friend is well equipped to deal with that pressure, although he encouraged him to enjoy the occasion rather than place unnecessary expectations on himself.

“I just wish him a good home weekend. He’s obviously being thrown straight into the Brazilian Grand Prix. It’s not an easy task,” he said.

“There’s a huge amount of attention, a huge amount of expectation on his shoulders.

“But from his side, he’s never driven this car before, so he just needs to enjoy it and have the best time possible.

“I’m sure he’ll handle it very well. He’s always been very good at that, so I’m happy, and hopefully we’ll have more press conferences with the three of us together, because that will be fun.”

The arrival of Câmara also gives Brazilian supporters another driver to follow after a decade without two home representatives competing together in Formula 1.

Bortoleto Determined to Move On From His 2025 Interlagos Crash

While Câmara prepares for his first Formula 1 appearance, Bortoleto is approaching his second home Grand Prix with unfinished business.

His first appearance at Interlagos in 2025 was overshadowed by a heavy accident, leaving him unable to enjoy the occasion as he had hoped.

The experience remains fresh in his memory, but he is determined to deliver a more positive performance this time.

“It means a huge amount, especially after last year,” Bortoleto admitted.

“For me, it obviously wasn’t the ideal year… Sorry, the ideal race, because my accident here was very heavy.

“And for a first home race, having an accident like that is never nice, especially in front of your whole country.”

Much has changed since that difficult weekend.

Bortoleto now represents Audi following the German manufacturer’s takeover of the former Sauber operation, with the team competing under a new identity and using its own power unit.

He believes the project has made encouraging progress during its first season and hopes to build on those results in Brazil.

“This year is different. I’m coming here with a new project, obviously the same team, but with different names, a different power unit, a different car, and so far we’ve had a very good season,” he explained.

“We’ve achieved some very good results, and I just want to enjoy my home Grand Prix, enjoy another weekend in Brazil and hopefully drive in front of my country for a little longer than last year.”

For Bortoleto, completing a stronger weekend at Interlagos would carry particular significance after the disappointment of his previous home appearance.

Another Brazilian on the Grid Is Welcome, but Talent Comes First

Although Câmara’s arrival ends a lengthy period without two Brazilian drivers on the Formula 1 grid, Bortoleto rejected the suggestion that he had felt isolated as his country’s only representative.

He pointed out that he had developed friendships with several drivers throughout his career, including Alpine’s Franco Colapinto, whom he frequently raced against in junior categories.

“I wouldn’t say I felt lonely. There are 21 other drivers,” Bortoleto said.

“They’re not from the same country as me, but I think it’s fun when you meet guys you’ve raced against your whole life.

“I raced against Franco for a large part of my life, as well as other drivers on the grid, so we have good relationships.”

The Brazilian was nevertheless pleased to welcome someone who shares his nationality and understands the particular experience of representing Brazil in Formula 1.

More importantly, he believes the championship should reward drivers on merit, regardless of nationality.

“It’s a very good thing that Rafa is in F1 because, again, he’s someone who deserves to be in Formula 1,” he explained.

“I think F1 should have the most talented drivers and people on the grid, so from my point of view, he deserves to be here.

“And it’s nice to have other Brazilians, someone I can also talk to about certain things, who will understand my world in F1. So yes, it’s nice.”

Audi Targets Haas as Constructors’ Championship Battle Continues

Despite his friendship with Câmara, Bortoleto has a clear competitive objective for the Brazilian Grand Prix.

Audi is currently chasing Haas in the Constructors’ Championship, with points scored at the Mexican Grand Prix helping the German team reduce the deficit to its American rival.

Bortoleto hopes to maintain that momentum at Interlagos, although he acknowledged that the circuit’s unpredictable weather could influence the outcome.

“Well, actually, we’re currently chasing Haas in the championship,” he said.

“We managed to close the points gap to them with the points we scored in Mexico, and our objective is obviously to score points.

“But at Interlagos, anything can happen. The weather can be completely crazy, so we’re going to keep pursuing that objective.

“The target is clear, so let’s see what we can achieve.”

The situation adds an interesting competitive dimension to Câmara’s arrival.

While Bortoleto is delighted to see his childhood friend secure a Formula 1 opportunity, the two Brazilians will represent teams involved in a direct championship battle.

For Audi, every point could prove valuable in its pursuit of Haas during the closing stages of the season.

For Bortoleto personally, the Brazilian Grand Prix also offers an opportunity to replace the painful memories of his 2025 accident with a stronger performance in front of his home supporters.

With two Brazilian drivers back on the grid for the first time in a decade, Interlagos promises to be a particularly meaningful occasion for both men, even as their teams pursue competing ambitions.
