MotoGP’s potential sale to F1’s Liberty Media stirs speculation, with Dorna’s Carmelo Ezpeleta hinting at openness to deals.
Carmelo Ezpeleta, the long-standing head of MotoGP, does not deny that the premier motorcycle racing category could be acquired by Formula 1’s owner, Liberty Media.
Speculation has intensified this week, with reports in Spain suggesting that the current owner (Bridgepoint) of MotoGP’s promoter, Dorna Sports, might be in discussions about a multi-billion-dollar deal.
“These are rumors, and that’s what they say,” Ezpeleta said, smiling when asked again about the speculation regarding a takeover by Liberty Media.
However, Ezpeleta appears to be laying the groundwork for a potential announcement. In his view, it would not be surprising if MotoGP were eventually sold.
“The major shareholders of Dorna are investment funds, which buy things to sell them. This means that, technically, we have always been for sale, from day one.”
“We have been working with Bridgepoint since 2006 and with the CPPIB (Canada Pension Plan Investment Board) since 2013. There have always been approaches (for acquisition) but, for now, that’s all, just approaches.”
“From this standpoint, we have always been in the same position as usual.”
