Hamilton’s Charge to P2 Brings Mercedes Double Glory

Hamilton Thrills in Vegas: Secures Mercedes One-Two

25/11/2024

Lewis Hamilton’s remarkable drive to second place highlighted Mercedes’ return to dominance, delivering a thrilling one-two finish in Las Vegas.

Starting tenth on the grid in Las Vegas after a tough qualifying session, Lewis Hamilton delivered an impressive charge to finish second, securing a one-two finish for Mercedes F1 — the team’s first since Brazil 2022. The seven-time world champion expressed delight at showcasing such remarkable race pace.

“I had a great time. When you’re moving forward and making progress, it’s always a fantastic feeling. It reminded me of the days when I started from the back and worked my way up, so it was great.”

Was the W15 even better in Vegas than at Silverstone, according to the British driver?

“Honestly, I don’t really remember. The best we’ve had in recent times, for sure. We found a very good balance in the car during the race. I felt much better than in qualifying, especially in Q3, but yes, it was just phenomenal for the team.”

Given the result, one might think Hamilton could have aimed even higher if he’d started closer to the front, but for him, the team’s one-two finish was what mattered most.

“It doesn’t really matter. At the end of the day, George did a fantastic job; he did everything he was supposed to do. I’m happy for him, and I’m just grateful to have climbed back and delivered a one-two for the team.”

“It was a very strong performance. It’s not that I didn’t think I could do it. I’ve had many races like that, but I’m generally satisfied with the comeback. You know, I tried to approach the race with a positive mindset. Being able to do what I wanted with the car, to push and overtake, was such an amazing feeling. Honestly, it was one of the most enjoyable races. Sure, if I had started on pole and simply led the race, I wouldn’t have had as much fun. Of course, winning a Grand Prix is always a big deal, but when you face adversity and fight through it, the satisfaction is so much greater.”

George Russell expects to maintain a similar level of performance this weekend in Qatar. Does his illustrious teammate share the same view?

“I have no idea. I don’t think anyone on the team knows why we were so quick this weekend. And everyone will be happy about that. But I think we struggle more in hotter conditions. When it comes to the two circuits, Qatar might not be too bad because it’s a bit cooler there, and the track is very smooth. So, we might not be too poor on that circuit. I think we were good there last year. Abu Dhabi, maybe less so. But we’ll see.”
