Williams Racing solidifies its lineup, securing Thai driver Alex Albon for several more years.
In significant news for the F1 transfer market this morning: Alex Albon, who was still under contract with Williams F1 until 2025, has decided to stay with his team for several more years (the exact number of years has not been revealed).
Indeed, the Thai was named as a potential candidate for a return to Red Bull Racing, amid internal power struggles. According to rumors, Thai shareholders of Red Bull wanted him back, but this will ultimately not happen. Thus, it removes a piece of the 2025 puzzle and confirms a greater sense of calm seems to be settling at Red Bull.
Albon started in F1 in 2019 with Toro Rosso, and due to his strong performances and following the disappointing results of Pierre Gasly in the Red Bull car, Helmut Marko decided to swap their seats by the end of the summer!
This promotion was certainly too rapid, as the 2020 season did not live up to his or Red Bull’s expectations. Replaced by Sergio Perez for the 2021 season, he remained as a test and development driver before joining Williams F1 in 2022, where he replaced George Russell who moved to Mercedes F1.
“I am incredibly happy to stay at Williams Racing and to continue working with such a talented and dedicated team.”
“It has been a challenging start to the year, but since I joined Williams, we have made significant progress together, and I have witnessed huge changes behind the scenes to bring us back towards the front of the grid.”
“This is a long-term project that I truly believe in and want to play a key role in, which is why I signed a multi-year contract.”
“The journey will take time, but I am convinced that we are building the right team to move forward and achieve great things in the coming years.”
James Vowles has thus managed to convince Albon to extend his journey and believe in his project.
“We are thrilled to secure Alex’s long-term future with Williams Racing.”
“He has exceptional talent, a real technical contribution, and a dedication to our cause and it’s a huge vote of confidence in Williams and the journey back to competitiveness that we are undertaking.”
“Since his arrival, Alex has consistently demonstrated his ability to perform under pressure, and securing him long-term is an important piece of the puzzle in making progress up the grid.”
