F1’s Shift: Domenicali Eyes End to Hybrids by 2030

15/05/2024

F1 CEO Domenicali hints at potentially phasing out hybrid engines by 2030 amidst new regulatory discussions.

Formula 1 may bid farewell to the controversial hybrid engine era starting in 2030.

F1 CEO Stefano Domenicali anticipates a “tighter battle” on the Imola track this weekend, along with an event full of off-track movements, rumors, and discussions.

For example, the new Concorde Agreement is currently under negotiation, with the crucial document that binds the sport to the FIA and the teams expiring next year.

“The issue of Red Bull owning two teams has come up,” admits Domenicali.

“However, they will be able to continue in this manner thanks to the contribution that the brand has made to the history of Formula 1.”

“We also confirm the maximum limit of 25 Grand Prix per season (unchanged but not yet reached), and we plan to extend the new sprint race format to more events, as it makes the race weekends more exciting.”

2025 will be the last season of the current regulatory cycle, with chassis, aerodynamics, and engine rules all set for a major overhaul for 2026.

“At the last F1 Commission meeting, there was agreement on the main points and it was decided that the rules would be published on June 1,” reveals Domenicali.

“All teams are already working on the 2026 cars. The aerodynamic package will see some significant new features.”

“The sensitive point is the high weight of the cars, and it remains a problem.”

“And also from my point of view, I would like the engines to produce a more pleasant and louder sound, as enthusiasts demand.”

“If sustainable fuels lead us to zero emissions, then we could even consider abandoning hybrid powertrains by 2030.”
