Mick Schumacher sees signs his Formula 1 career isn’t over yet.
Since losing his seat at Haas F1 at the end of 2022, the 24-year-old has been relegated to a reserve role at Mercedes F1, which he will retain in 2024. However, this year he will also return to competition for Alpine in the WEC championship, with Le Mans as the highlight in June.
The son of F1 legend Michael Schumacher believes his chances of returning to the grid in 2025 are real.
“The driver market is already very active and continues to grow in the coming months, which could work in my favor,” Mick tells Sport Bild.
“A lot is going to happen in this area. And there will not only be changes in the cockpits, but one or two drivers might also end their careers.”
Schumacher also sees hope in looking at the categories immediately below F1.
“There are currently no mega talents emerging from the junior categories. Even though it’s clear that I won’t get anything for free. It’s up to me to deliver.”
Schumacher stated he hopes to remind F1 bosses this year that he is a racing driver who deserves to be at the pinnacle of motorsport.
“I know I have the skills for it. I’m good enough. I’ve shown it in Formula 4, Formula 3, and Formula 2.”
“The fact that I’ve won races and championships is quickly forgotten. But I’ve proven that I can also handle pressure in those categories. And Formula 1 is not so different.”
However, Schumacher admitted that many – including those on social media – have already written him off.
“But even though that’s part of today’s society, I think those people are too hasty.”
“What I do a bit differently from most drivers – and this probably comes from my father – is that I can lead a team in the right direction.”
“I’m a team player who rallies people behind me. Of course, we drive alone on the track, but you win as a team. And few people in Formula 1 have that mentality. I think I can be an asset for many team directors.”
