Günther Steiner: Decade of Triumphs with Haas F1

14/01/2024

Reflecting on his impressive tenure, Haas F1 Team Principal Günther Steiner recounts significant achievements, from their inaugural season’s surprises to historic moments like Magnussen’s unexpected 2022 pole position.

Setting aside this week’s news, Günther Steiner took a moment to reflect on some of the highlights of his tenure as Haas F1 Team Principal.

There are of course, firstly, two memories from their inaugural season.

“When we were testing in Barcelona for the first time in 2016! You think to yourself, ‘Wow, this is really happening, we are now on track’.”

“And obviously, when we scored points in our first race in Australia. There were so many naysayers back then, all these people saying ‘This will never work’ or ‘How come they are at this level?’. So when you go to Melbourne and score points, it’s pretty cool.”

“But I think over the 10 years with the team, since its inception, there have been a lot of good moments. Finishing fifth in the championship in 2018, in our third year, is something I think few people have done before, so we always look back on that year with a bit of nostalgia.”

When Kevin Magnussen‘s shocking pole position at Interlagos in 2022 was mentioned, he admits, “Oh, I forgot about that moment!”

“You think you’re dreaming, then it’s done and it’s fantastic. We didn’t have our best year, but at the end of the season, you get this pole and you think ‘there it is, we’ve done it, we finally have a pole for the team.”
