Wolff refuses title calculations as Antonelli nears crown

Antonelli could clinch F1 title in Austin as Wolff refuses to count points.

Mercedes team principal remains cautious despite Antonelli extending his championship advantage with a podium in Singapore

Kimi Antonelli could secure his maiden Formula 1 World Championship at the United States Grand Prix in Austin, but Mercedes team principal Toto Wolff is refusing to consider the mathematical scenarios just yet. Despite the Italian strengthening his championship position with third place in Singapore, Wolff insists that mechanical failures and accidents could still dramatically change the outcome of the season.

Mercedes endured a mixed Singapore Grand Prix, with Antonelli securing another podium finish while George Russell recovered from the back of the grid to finish ninth.

The result nevertheless represented another significant step towards Antonelli’s first world title, with the young Italian extending his advantage over Lewis Hamilton, who finished sixth for Ferrari.

For Wolff, Antonelli’s performance also provided encouraging evidence that Mercedes’ latest W17 upgrades are beginning to deliver their intended benefits.

Mercedes sees encouraging signs from W17 upgrades

Mercedes has faced considerable uncertainty surrounding its latest development package, with difficulties assessing the improvements introduced to the W17.

However, Wolff believes Antonelli’s Singapore performance offered a clearer indication of the car’s potential.

« Yes, it was a difficult race. And with all the discussion surrounding the upgrades, I think we finally saw what the car was capable of doing, » Wolff said.

« Obviously, when you’re running fourth, it’s quite difficult to make progress here in Singapore. But I’m happy with what he did today. I’m happy with the result. »

Antonelli’s third-place finish came despite a challenging race in which overtaking opportunities were limited by the tight characteristics of the Marina Bay circuit.

While Mercedes still has work to do to fully understand its updated package, Wolff viewed the result as a positive indication of progress.

Russell limited to ninth despite impressive overtakes

George Russell faced a significantly more difficult afternoon after starting from the back of the grid.

The British driver managed several overtakes as he worked his way through the field but ultimately finished ninth, unable to make further progress despite his car’s performance advantage over some rivals.

Wolff believes Russell extracted close to the maximum possible result given the circumstances.

« Yes, it’s so difficult to overtake. I mean, he made some really remarkable overtakes. But then, ultimately, it all comes down to the relative performance of the cars, » he explained.

« Even when a car is a second or a second and a half slower than you, you simply can’t overtake it. »

The result was frustrating for Russell, particularly as his teammate continued to strengthen his championship position.

Antonelli could secure the championship in Austin

Antonelli’s third-place finish in Singapore has brought him closer to the world championship, with the title potentially within reach at the next race in Austin.

Under the mathematical scenario outlined ahead of the United States Grand Prix, Antonelli would secure the championship by winning the race, provided Russell finishes ninth or lower and Hamilton finishes no higher than sixth.

However, Wolff has little interest in calculating the precise combinations required.

The Mercedes team principal, who acknowledges his own superstitious tendencies, believes the unpredictable nature of motorsport makes it dangerous to assume the championship is already decided.

« Yes, as we said before the race today, the most important thing is to score points, » Wolff said.

« We didn’t expect to finish ahead of Lewis because they were quick. So coming away with more points than him is a good thing.

« You look at the numbers and ask an artificial intelligence what the probability is of him winning the championship, and it would probably tell you almost 100%.

« But this is motorsport. You can have a mechanical failure, you can have accidents.

« And that’s when things could start to become stressful. So I think we need to approach the races one at a time, make sure we keep scoring points and ultimately hope that the title comes his way. »

Wolff refuses to focus on championship calculations

Asked specifically whether Antonelli could be crowned champion in Austin, Wolff admitted that he had not examined the mathematical permutations.

Instead, he stressed the importance of avoiding unnecessary pressure and maintaining Mercedes’ current approach.

« I haven’t looked at it from that perspective because, as soon as I start asking myself how many points are needed and when he could win the championship, I have to remind myself that this is motorsport and completely crazy things have happened before, » he said.

« Mathematically, I haven’t looked at the points, but it would probably require George and Lewis to have a very bad race and Kimi to win.

« So it’s not a very likely scenario to have both things happen at the same time.

« But the objective is to score points and not lose too many to the others. »

Wolff was particularly encouraged by Antonelli’s ability to gain points on Hamilton in Singapore, where Ferrari had demonstrated strong pace throughout the weekend.

« Like today, gaining points on Lewis was unexpected, and the title will eventually come his way. Whether that’s in Mexico, Brazil or later, we’ll see. »

The Mercedes boss also addressed uncertainty surrounding the remaining championship calendar, emphasising that the team must prepare for the full scheduled number of races.

« I suppose, regarding whether the Qatar and Abu Dhabi Grands Prix will take place, everyone is currently saying they will, so we have to approach it on the basis that there are six races remaining, not four or five. »

For Wolff, maintaining consistency is more important than targeting a particular race for Antonelli’s championship coronation.

Mystery fluid leak affects Antonelli’s cockpit

Beyond the championship implications, Antonelli’s Singapore Grand Prix was also complicated by an unusual technical issue.

During the race, the Italian reported to race engineer Peter Bonnington that he could feel liquid running around his legs inside the cockpit.

Despite the discomfort and uncertainty surrounding the problem, Antonelli continued and secured third place.

Wolff admitted that Mercedes had not yet established the exact source of the liquid, although the team’s initial suspicion centred on the car’s onboard hydration system.

« We don’t know what kind of liquid it was, » Wolff explained.

« We suspect that the drinks bottle may have burst or developed a leak, but he should have known if that had been the case. »

The team had yet to confirm whether the hydration system was responsible.

Brake overheating creates further concern

Antonelli also experienced a separate braking issue during the race, with excessive heat affecting the feel and travel of the brake pedal.

According to Wolff, the problem appeared after a pit stop and was linked to insufficient cooling.

« The other issue was that he experienced a build-up of heat in the brakes, and I think that was after the pit stop, » he said.

« That’s why the brake pedal travel became longer, before immediately returning to normal when he got more airflow to cool them. »

The issue ultimately proved manageable, allowing Antonelli to complete the race without losing his podium position.

Nevertheless, the two incidents highlighted the technical challenges Mercedes continues to face, even as its championship-leading driver moves closer to securing the title.

Mercedes keeps its focus on the bigger picture

Antonelli’s Singapore podium provided another important boost to his championship campaign, while also offering Mercedes encouraging signs about the performance of its updated W17.

Russell’s recovery to ninth demonstrated the difficulty of making progress through the field at Marina Bay, even with a significant pace advantage.

For Wolff, however, the main priority remains avoiding unnecessary risks and ensuring that Antonelli continues collecting points.

With the possibility of a maiden world championship in Austin, attention will inevitably turn towards the mathematical scenarios that could secure the title.

But the Mercedes team principal remains determined to approach the final stages of the season without becoming distracted by calculations.

For now, Wolff’s message is clear: keep scoring points, continue improving the car and allow the championship to take care of itself.
