Wolff Eyes Barcelona for Key Showdown

Wolff Predicts Tight F1 Contest in Barcelona Clash

14/06/2024

Toto Wolff anticipates a gripping F1 showdown in Barcelona, hinting at a four-team race for victory.

Mercedes F1 was surprisingly fast at the Circuit Gilles Villeneuve during the Canadian Grand Prix.

George Russell secured pole position on Saturday and finished third on Sunday. Lewis Hamilton started from 7th place but finished fourth on Sunday.

The team boss, Toto Wolff, sees positive developments and four teams vying for the top spots if the tightening is confirmed.

“Perhaps Barcelona will be interesting to get confirmations,” said the Austrian.

“I don’t know if Red Bull, Ferrari, and McLaren will be very strong there. I mean, Austria has always been good ground for them. We said McLaren was stronger when they came back last year, and it has never been a good track for us, unlike Barcelona.”

“I think we cannot overlook Max and Red Bull; they remain the benchmark. The last few races have been tougher for them. But everyone has made good progress.”

“There were two or three teams that could potentially have won the race in Canada, maybe not quite us. I don’t know if they have taken a step back. The most important thing is that the gap is narrowing.”

“McLaren has made huge progress, and we must not forget Ferrari. They weren’t visible in Canada, but fifteen days earlier, in Monaco, they were the benchmark.”

“These are three teams that are in competition, and I very much hope to confirm that we will soon be four competing for victories.”

Naturally, Wolff hopes that his team’s progress will now be confirmed everywhere, with the Spanish Grand Prix being “a good test as it features all kinds of turns.”

“I hope that the performance in Canada isn’t linked to the track. Montreal is the exception with its average cornering speed and directional changes.”

“But overall, our drivers have said that the car is now in a space where they can push it, they are more confident and everything is much easier.”
