Leclerc and Sainz Weigh In on Norris-Verstappen Duel

21/10/2024

Ferrari drivers Leclerc and Sainz share differing views on race rules following Norris and Verstappen’s fierce on-track battle.

The Ferrari drivers were questioned after the United States Grand Prix about the controversy between Lando Norris and Max Verstappen.

The two drivers found themselves in a tough battle towards the end of the race, as well as at the start, which greatly benefited Leclerc.

What does the Monegasque think?

“I didn’t see any of that, the final battle, I don’t really watch the big screens. I only saw the start, Turn 1, which seemed OK to me. I mean, it’s a tough race, and everyone will try something like that anyway. So, nothing to comment on regarding the start, but I didn’t see the rest.”

Sainz also admits he “didn’t analyze” the end-of-race battle between the two main title contenders. But what does he think about the clarity of the rules? Should they be reviewed in the case of “dive bombs” becoming too frequent?

“I think some rules are clear. Others are still a bit vague for me, let’s put it that way. I think there was an example in the Sprint with Oscar’s overtake. For me, it was totally normal and very similar to what we’ve done between us in the sprint. And I felt that the penalty Oscar received yesterday was really harsh and didn’t match certain guidelines I thought were in place. So yes, that penalty surprised me on Saturday. As for this race, I have no idea because I haven’t seen or reviewed the race yet, or the 5-second penalties to see if they were OK or not.”

“I agree with Carlos on Oscar’s penalty on Saturday,” Leclerc adds.

“I also thought it was a bit too harsh. However, regarding the rules, I think they are clear. Sometimes, the interpretation of the rule can be a bit different because it’s impossible to have regulations that cover every scenario. Every scenario is different, has its own particularities, and you have to analyze them differently and interpret the rules in specific ways for particular situations, which the FIA tries to handle as best as they can. However, sometimes we disagree, and I think with Oscar’s case, it’s something we’ll probably discuss at the next driver briefing.”
