Hamilton's Hopes Dashed in Canadian GP Qualifying

Hamilton Lost Pace and Grip in Qualifying

08/06/2024

In a surprising twist at the Canadian Grand Prix, Lewis Hamilton lost his grip and pace during qualifying, finishing a disappointing seventh.

Lewis Hamilton was in fine form today but ultimately lost out to his teammate… and several other drivers in Q3 for the pole position at the Canadian Grand Prix.

The Mercedes F1 driver must settle for 7th place, undoubtedly a disappointment given the performance of the W15 in Montreal.

“First and foremost, congratulations to George for his excellent work. It’s truly fantastic for the team. Obviously, everyone has worked tremendously hard to bring improvements from the factory, so this will be a huge boost for everyone,” Hamilton said.

“The car behaved excellently all weekend, and as soon as we got to qualifying, it just vanished for me.”

“The grip was gone. In Free Practice 3, I had a lot of pace, then came qualifying, and the tyres just didn’t work anymore.”

“Nothing had changed on the car. We’ll need to consult with the engineers to see what went wrong, but it seems to have affected many drivers.”

Team boss Toto Wolff is elated with Russell’s pole but remains cautious.

“Firstly, we can’t speak of tomorrow yet. We are in pole position, and that was incredible. His lap was superb.”

“As we’ve been saying for a while, we are moving in the right direction. We’ve added a lot of small elements over the last few races, some more visible than others, but we are definitely heading towards a more competitive car.”

“In Formula 1, it’s never just one thing on the car that makes all the difference.”

“We used the old wing yesterday, and we were very competitive in all conditions, in fact. So, it’s about what’s happening with the undertray, minor elements on the bodywork and beneath, and obviously the front wing, which is more visible.”

“I’m just sorry for Lewis, we need to see why his setup didn’t heat the tyres as well as George’s, although they were very similar.”
