Lance Stroll pulls out of the Spanish Grand Prix due to wrist pain linked to past surgery and faces an indefinite absence.
This evening brings unexpected news from Barcelona: Lance Stroll has withdrawn from the remainder of the weekend, despite having qualified 14th. The Canadian driver must undergo wrist surgery and will not take part in the Spanish Grand Prix.
Worse still, he could be out for several weeks to address issues stemming from a previous operation in 2023, which followed a cycling accident during the winter and had already caused him to miss pre-season testing.
Having taken part in qualifying for the Spanish GP, he cannot be replaced for the rest of the weekend, meaning only 19 drivers will line up on the grid. He was also summoned by the stewards for failing to attend the mandatory weigh-in but did not respond.
Aston Martin F1 has confirmed that he will need time to recover from the injury. It is believed he may have returned too soon after the accident in which he broke both hands and had difficulty walking. Nonetheless, he was back behind the wheel just two and a half weeks later.
“For the past six weeks, Lance has been experiencing pain in his hand and wrist, and his medical advisor believes it is linked to the surgery he underwent in 2023. As a result, his medical team has confirmed he will not race tomorrow and will undergo a procedure to address the issue before focusing on recovery,” the statement reads.
