“Keeping the Pressure On”: Lawson’s F1 Ascent

31/03/2024

RB F1 is gearing up to transition Liam Lawson from reserve to a potential Formula 1 regular, highlighting his significant progress and potential within the team.

RB F1 hopes to soon offer Liam Lawson the opportunity to become a Formula 1 regular. The New Zealander impressed during his stint last year with AlphaTauri and is likely to emerge as the beneficiary of the anticipated reshuffles within the Faenza team. In the meantime, he is being kept active in older cars and serves as the reserve driver.

“First and foremost, he is an excellent reserve driver,” stated Peter Bayer, CEO of RB F1. “He keeps the seats warm, and they don’t get complacent. At the same time, we’re trying to get him as much driving time as possible. We conducted a Test of Previous Cars (TPC, referring to tests of cars more than two years old, editor’s note) in January at Imola.”

“We’re looking to do another one. So, we’re trying to give him as much track time as possible. He’s participating in simulation sessions and is with us. He is an important part of the team, but I think that’s really it.”

Bayer explains that Lawson continues to prepare for any opportunity, noting that the driver has already proven he deserves a spot and is putting pressure on the current main drivers: “He’s getting ready, and at the same time, by being prepared and having demonstrated his capabilities last year, he naturally maintains pressure on Red Bull.”

“It’s an interesting situation because there’s a bit of pressure from below and a ripple effect upwards, which of course puts some pressure on the drivers, I acknowledge.”

“But I don’t think it’s any more significant than in any other team. In fact, I believe they are in a better position in our team because there’s more flexibility, there are more opportunities than in another team where if you’re not performing, it’s over.”
