Leclerc Plays It Safe in Sprint, Eyes Qualifying

Leclerc Plays It Safe in Sprint, Eyes Qualifying

04/05/2024

Charles Leclerc chose caution over risk in the Miami F1 Sprint, securing second place with an eye on the upcoming crucial qualifiers. His strategy reflects a tactical approach to racing.

Charles Leclerc finished the Miami F1 Sprint in second place, the same position he started from. The Ferrari driver got off to a better start than Max Verstappen but admits he played it safe, given that qualifying is just a few hours away.

“I had a good start, I was on the inside at turn 1 but I didn’t want to take any risks because we have the qualif next and if there’s an accident, you don’t participate. We braked very late with Max, he managed to keep his position. I pushed very hard, but he had a good pace early in the race,” notes Leclerc, who hopes to challenge him tomorrow.

“We had similar degradation after that, so tomorrow’s race will be interesting, qualifying will be crucial to get a good starting position, as far forward as possible, and we hope to put them under pressure with the strategy.”

The Monegasque positions himself as a candidate for pole position, now that he feels more comfortable on the circuit than he did yesterday due to his mistake in free practice: “It was very tight yesterday, not many laps in FP, but with the Sprint I was able to do more laps and I hope to aim for the pole. That’s the goal, we’ll see if we can achieve it.”
