Komatsu: It’s ‘extremely important’ for Bearman to have a clean weekend

Oliver Bearman has not scored points since the Saudi Arabian Grand Prix and admits he is a bit lost regarding his performance. The Haas F1 driver hopes that the Imola package will suit him this weekend in Barcelona, as he struggles to understand how to optimise his results.

“Honestly, I’m a bit lost because the weekends where we expected to struggle, we actually did very well — and vice versa,” said Bearman. “So it’s difficult to make predictions for this car.”

“What we’ve done is bring the new upgrades from Imola, and we need to see how they work in high-speed corners because Imola is not as fast as Barcelona.”

“If we can get everything under control and deliver good performance, I think this could once again be an interesting weekend for the car’s potential.”

Ayao Komatsu wants to see an error-free weekend from Bearman, as he believes this will be key for the Briton to achieve a strong result if the car allows it: “It’s extremely important. It’s what I said before the start of this triple-header: he just needs to have a consistent, clean weekend.”

“He didn’t do that in Miami — he had a crash — Imola was brilliant, and Monaco was perfect apart from that incident, but it still wasn’t a clean weekend. We have no doubt about his speed, his ability, so he needs a clean weekend to be able to perform.”

“His talent, speed, racecraft and everything else have already been proven. If you look at the weekends where he’s had a clean race, he’s delivered, so we just need one clean weekend, and then there’s no doubt the results will follow.”

Bearman started his Barcelona weekend with a seventh place in FP1, which is a solid first step. The question now is whether he can maintain that level throughout the weekend without making a mistake.
