Hamilton prefers Barcelona but mainly wants F1 to stay in Spain

Lewis Hamilton enjoys racing at the Barcelona circuit and feels it represents what Formula 1 means in Spain. The Ferrari driver is not concerned about it possibly being replaced on the calendar by Madrid, even though he believes the Catalan track is a long-standing classic after 35 editions.

“I don’t really have a strong opinion on it, to be honest,” said Hamilton. “I enjoy racing here in Barcelona, I think it’s a beautiful city. Honestly, I haven’t been to Madrid, but I’ve heard good things about it. I also haven’t seen the layout of the circuit, so I can’t really comment.”

“I think ultimately, losing one of the classics — and this is one of them — would be a shame, because, as I said, it’s a great city. There are a lot of fans here in Spain, especially since Fernando came along.”

“I think as long as we still have a race in Spain, that’s probably what matters most. We feel like Barcelona is the home of Formula 1 in Spain. But it’s okay for the sport to move forward.”

Hamilton has not seen the layout for Madrid, which was recently revealed in a video, and is concerned he might not enjoy this semi-urban track: “Madrid, as I said, is a great place, provided they build a good circuit, which I don’t have much hope for.”

“New circuit designs are very, very hit-or-miss. Ninety percent of the time they’re worse, so as long as it’s a better circuit — or at least as good — then I don’t mind.”
