Formula 1 is gearing up for a “huge” announcement that could materialize before the end of the week, according to multiple sources in England and Italy.
Indeed, Ferrari was preparing a bombshell announcement: Lewis Hamilton would be joining Charles Leclerc at the team for the Formula 1 2025 season!
Hamilton’s contractual situation made headlines at the start of 2023, with his previous contract set to expire at the end of the preceding season. The ongoing struggles of Mercedes under the current ground effect regulations for the second year fueled speculation that the British driver might seek new pastures.
The seven-time world champion has often been linked with a move to Ferrari, though both parties quickly denied any serious discussions had taken place.
Ultimately, it was confirmed before last September’s Italian Grand Prix that Hamilton had signed a two-year deal to stay with Mercedes F1 alongside George Russell.

Media reports suggest that Lewis Hamilton’s contract with Mercedes F1 for 2024 and 2025 is actually for one firm year (2024) and one optional year (2025), with the option in his favor.
If Mercedes F1 is competitive this year, Hamilton could aim for an 8th title and then turn to a final challenge at Ferrari. If the team is not, he knows that 2025 will inevitably be sacrificed by Mercedes for 2026. Thus, he also has every interest in finding himself at Ferrari.
