Hamilton’s Ferrari Move: Dreams or Strategy?

29/02/2024

Lewis Hamilton active sa clause de sortie chez Mercedes, choisissant Ferrari pour 2025, suscitant débats et réactions.

Another well-known name in F1 has questioned why Lewis Hamilton activated an exit clause from his contract to leave Mercedes F1 at the end of 2024 to join Ferrari.

Fernando Alonso recently mocked Hamilton’s claim that racing for Ferrari was always a “childhood dream,” and now another former teammate of the Briton shares a similar perspective.

“It could be a genuine comment from Hamilton,” said Heikki Kovalainen, who was Hamilton’s teammate at McLaren in 2008 and 2009, “but I don’t think it’s the only reason.”

“There must have been something else behind the scenes in this announced split.”

In the paddock, it’s said that Lewis Hamilton was “very disappointed” with Mercedes F1 boss Toto Wolff, who reportedly refused the seven-time world champion’s request for a new contract of more than two years and a lifetime ambassadorial role.

Wolff has admitted that he left the door open at Mercedes for 17-year-old talent Kimi Antonelli, whom the Austrian compares to Max Verstappen. Wolff had attempted to recruit Verstappen, before Red Bull, but couldn’t because he couldn’t offer quick access to F1, with Hamilton and Rosberg having long-term contracts at the time.

“If there was any hint that this year’s Mercedes would not be super competitive, when Mercedes did not give Hamilton a long-term contract, Hamilton might have felt that Mercedes could consider replacing him at the end of the season,” Kovalainen adds.

“There are a lot of team relationships now being tested for a year. Let’s see how Lewis, George (Russell), and Toto get through this last year together.”
