Ferrari has confirmed that Carlos Sainz’s surgical procedure went very smoothly.

Absent for the remainder of the Saudi Arabian GP weekend, the Spanish driver underwent an appendectomy locally in the past few hours.

“Carlos has come out of surgery. Everything went well, and he is now resting at the hospital.”

“We extend our full support to him for a swift recovery.”

Therefore, Oliver Bearman steps in as his replacement, and the young 18-year-old Brit impressed in Free Practice 3.

“The young drivers coming through are achieving a very high level of performance,” acknowledges Toto Wolff, the Mercedes F1 team principal, who was monitoring the young Ferrari driver.

“It’s becoming so competitive from karting to junior formulas and to transition a young adult from F2 into a Ferrari with no sessions and be competitive like that is remarkable. I don’t even think he has extracted everything from his engine on his last run. So, it’s very impressive to see and very encouraging for the next generation.”

“There’s pressure on Oliver; he’s driving a Ferrari, but expectations are very low, and if you’re given that mental leeway, I think he can be unleashed and competitive.”
