Alpine F1 Falters in Sprint Qualifying at Chinese GP

Gasly Overcomes Mechanical Woes, Qualifies 16th for F1 Sprint

19/04/2024

Alpine F1 faced setbacks in SQ1 of the Chinese Grand Prix, with mixed reactions from drivers Gasly and Ocon.

Pierre Gasly qualified 16th for the Sprint of the Chinese Grand Prix, one place ahead of his teammate. The Alpine F1 driver had experienced very difficult FP1 sessions, with a mechanical issue, but he is satisfied to have performed better during the Sprint Shootout.

“The Friday morning session was tough due to a high voltage issue, but the team worked hard and managed to swap the engine and battery before the Sprint qualifying as a precaution,” Gasly recounts.

“The session went a bit better than expected, even though we are far from having achieved our goal. From what we have seen so far, the improvements made to Esteban’s car seem to be a step in the right direction.”

“I’m looking forward to Miami where we can both race with the updated car. In the meantime, we will continue to work hard to get the most out of the car during the Sprint race and tomorrow’s qualifying.”

Esteban Ocon clocked the 17th time despite his new floor, even though he thinks he could have done better: “We did not maximize the car’s potential today. I think we can extract more performance from the car and, unfortunately, with only one practice session, we didn’t get everything together in time for the Sprint qualifying.”

“We will do our best to make progress in tomorrow morning’s sprint race and make changes to the car when the Parc Fermé opens before the Grand Prix qualifying. We will do some analysis overnight and assess the setup changes we can make between the sessions to improve the situation tomorrow.”
