A dominant session for McLaren, Piastri 0.5s ahead of Norris. Leclerc 0.7s off in third.

Full results from the Spanish Grand Prix, Round 9 of the 2025 F1 world championship.

After an opening day that saw the McLaren F1 drivers dominate both free practice sessions, the Formula 1 paddock reconvenes this afternoon for FP3 of the Spanish Grand Prix at the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya.

Following a day of work on less flexible front wings, teams will now be able to debut their new setups in order to fine-tune the performance of their cars in line with the new Technical Directive TD018.

Behind McLaren, the gaps were tight, with Max Verstappen running very close to Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri, as were George Russell and Andrea Kimi Antonelli, the Mercedes drivers. For Ferrari, it seemed a bit more difficult, and the same goes for Williams, which is far from being as close to the top teams as it was in previous races.

12:22 pm: Conditions are similar to yesterday, with 29 degrees in the air and 43 degrees on the track. The asphalt is slightly cooler, having nearly reached 50 degrees on Friday.

12:30 pm: The session is underway.

12:31 pm: No one appears eager to hit the track just yet, and for good reason. Drivers typically run fewer laps in FP3 and prefer to do so once the track has evolved. However, an Alpine is on track, and it is Franco Colapinto.

12:34 pm: James Vowles was asked about the difficulties faced by the Argentine driver in his first races with Alpine.

The Williams F1 boss, who ran Colapinto at the end of the 2024 season, is not surprised and advises Alpine to be patient despite Flavio Briatore’s repeated threats toward his driver.

Vowles said the following: “That is what we saw with the arrival of Carlos [Sainz], for instance. Colapinto joined mid-season, just as he did with us, and he had some very strong races and others that required more time. I think what I ask for everyone, whether it is Franco or others, is to give them time. It takes time to adapt to a car.”

12:38 pm: Gabriel Bortoleto, Fernando Alonso and Lance Stroll have joined the Argentine on track, while Carlos Sainz and Lando Norris appear to be getting ready. However, track activity remains very limited at the start of the session.

12:41 pm: Bortoleto, Esteban Ocon and Pierre Gasly are on track, along with Nico Hülkenberg.

12:44 pm: Yuki Tsunoda is also on track, as is Norris.

12:49 pm: Sainz is the first to set a proper benchmark time on soft tyres with a 1:14.124, while Norris goes second on medium tyres with a 1:14.540.

12:51 pm: Charles Leclerc goes quicker with a 1:13.941 on soft tyres, and Oscar Piastri slots in just ahead of his teammate on mediums.

12:52 pm: Lewis Hamilton moves into second on medium tyres, just 0.121s behind Leclerc. Alex Albon places fourth, just behind Sainz, on softs.

12:53 pm: Verstappen goes fourth on medium tyres, and Norris sets the fastest time with a 1:13.869, still on mediums. Fernando Alonso places just ahead of Albon, and George Russell goes top on softs with a 1:13.396.

12:57 pm: Leclerc improves but remains nearly half a second behind Russell.

1:00 pm: As we reach the halfway mark of the session, Tsunoda improves but remains 15th on mediums. Yesterday, the Japanese driver expressed concern about not understanding why he was so slow. Andrea Kimi Antonelli takes the second-fastest time.

1:04 pm: Oliver Bearman had a close call, running two wheels into the gravel, but the Briton avoids going off track.

1:10 pm: Most drivers are currently on long runs.

1:13 pm: Verstappen goes fastest on soft tyres with a 1:13.375.

1:14 pm: Norris made a mistake during his flying lap on soft tyres.

1:17 pm: The Saubers surprise by placing in the top five, with Bortoleto fourth and Hülkenberg fifth. The lap times are expected to pick up.

1:18 pm: Norris’s mistake was caused by “porpoising” according to his engineer, who told him to return to the garage to “raise the rear” of the car.

1:20 pm: Piastri goes fastest with a 1:12.387.

1:21 pm: Norris takes second, half a second behind Piastri and two-tenths ahead of Leclerc, who placed just ahead of Verstappen.

1:22 pm: Hamilton can do no better than eighth for now, while Isack Hadjar has set the fifth-fastest time.

1:29 pm: Verstappen completes another flying lap but remains 1.2 seconds off the benchmark.

1:30 pm: The session is over.
