Adrian Newey is poised to leave Red Bull, marking a significant shift for the team. His planned departure heralds a new chapter both for him and the Formula 1 landscape.
This end-of-day bombshell could trigger further moves: Red Bull Technology’s design director, Adrian Newey, will leave the team following controversy and allegations against team director Christian Horner.
Several sources in recent hours, from the BBC in England to Auto Motor und Sport in Germany, confirm that Newey, regarded as the greatest Formula 1 designer in history, has told Red Bull he wants to move on.
“The information was independently verified by the BBC from high-level sources close to Red Bull and Newey.”
The 65-year-old is disturbed by the situation at Red Bull since Horner was accused of sexual harassment and coercive and abusive behavior by an employee, which Horner still denies. Newey’s contract would run until the end of 2025, but he would like to leave at the end of the 2024 season to be free to work for a new team next year, under the 2026 regulations.
His future destination is unclear, but a shocking transfer to Ferrari, Aston Martin, or Mercedes F1 is mentioned. In the first case, he would fulfill a past wish, in the second he would join the super team Lawrence Stroll is building, and in the third, he could join… Max Verstappen.
Indeed, this announcement could be the trigger for a series of departures from Red Bull Racing, starting with Dr. Helmut Marko and the Dutch driver, who has always stated he wanted stability in the team with the people around him.
Red Bull and Newey have not immediately responded to requests for comments.
The news comes as the suspended Red Bull employee has launched her appeal, which has been under review for two days internally by a new independent lawyer. This time, the employee reportedly provided further evidence to prevail. The process could last until mid-May.
