Formula 1 Pushes Back 2025 Points System Verdict to July

Formula 1 Pushes Back 2025 Points System Verdict to July

Amid virtual deliberations, F1 postpones critical decision on altering points system to July. Key proposal deferred, necessitating thorough scrutiny, including discussions on technical modifications and pre-season trials for 2025.

Today, the F1 Commission convened virtually to discuss topics such as adjustments to championship points allocations, changes to technical and sporting regulations, and pre-season testing for 2025 following proposals from the Sports Advisory Committee.

The key proposal, which would award points to the top 12 instead of the top 10, was not voted on but was deferred to July to allow time for further analysis of its impact.

Here’s an overview of the main points of discussion and decisions:

  • Championship Points Scales

Commission members discussed a proposal to change the distribution of Championship points as outlined in Articles 6.4 and 6.5 of the Sporting Regulations. It was agreed that a more detailed analysis of the proposed changes was necessary before making a proposal at the July F1 Commission meeting (see below the points scale being considered for analysis).

  • 2025 Pre-Season Testing

Following discussions at the recent Sports Advisory Committee, it was agreed that a proposal concerning the dates and locations for the 2025 pre-season tests would be presented by Formula 1 management for review by the F1 Commission.

  • Rear-Facing Cameras

The introduction of rear-facing cameras was agreed to take effect from the 2024 Spanish Grand Prix.

A number of minor amendments were also approved concerning the sporting and financial regulations. These will be unveiled when voted on by the FIA World Council.
