Ricciardo receives a 3-place grid penalty for Miami

Daniel Ricciardo faces a grid penalty in Miami after an illegal overtake under safety car conditions.

The Stewards, having received a report from the Race Director, summoned Daniel Ricciardo and Nico Hülkenberg after the race, along with representatives from RB F1 and Haas F1.

According to them, car 3 (Ricciardo) overtook car 27 (Hülkenberg) under safety car conditions, a violation of Article 55.8 of the FIA Formula 1 Sporting Regulations.

Ricciardo was found guilty and given a 3-place grid penalty for the next race he will participate in (Miami) and 2 penalty points on his license.

Reasons for the decision:

The stewards heard from Daniel Ricciardo, Nico Hülkenberg, team representatives and reviewed data, videos, timing, and team radios and determined that:

– Car 3 overtook car 27 while the race was under safety car conditions.

-The driver of car 3 admitted to deliberately overtaking car 27, but explained that he felt he could do so because car 27 had previously overtaken him under safety car conditions on lap 28. We note that car 27 was allowed to overtake car 3 on lap 28 due to Article 55.8 h).

-There was no justifiable reason for car 3 to overtake car 27 while the race was ongoing under safety car conditions.

– Therefore, we imposed a 10-second penalty on car 3.

-As Ricciardo was unable to serve the penalty due to a retirement, we imposed a 3-place grid penalty on Ricciardo for the next race he participates in.
