Fernando Alonso shows interest in Aston Martin’s WEC program, but rules out participation before 2025, seeking focus elsewhere.
Fernando Alonso has acknowledged his openness to the possibility of participating in the World Endurance Championship (WEC) with Aston Martin.
The British manufacturer is expected to join the championship next year with its Aston Martin Valkyrie.
Alonso has clinched the World Endurance Championship title and secured two victories at the 24 Hours of Le Mans with Toyota during his hiatus from F1.
The Spaniard is currently evaluating whether he wishes to continue in F1 beyond the current season, as he may be pursued by either Mercedes F1 or Red Bull Racing, or remain with Aston Martin F1.
When asked about his interest in Aston Martin’s WEC program, Alonso stated, “Yes, but not now. Not for 2025. It hasn’t crossed my mind.”
“I love the Valkyrie. I’m getting my own (road version) in July. I’ve been waiting so long, as it’s a year for delivery!”
“So why not? Maybe if I drive this car at home and then on a track, it would be magnificent.”
It’s worth noting that there are several rumors about Lawrence Stroll, the owner of Aston Martin, offering a lucrative deal to bring Adrian Newey to his team, while the Briton is also being courted by Ferrari.
In December, Alonso had already discussed the possibility of working with him one day, as he mentioned the Valkyrie (designed by Newey for Aston Martin via Red Bull Technology).
“We’ve been very close to working together several times and we’ve talked about it.”
“I remember when he released a book a few years ago in Spain, I had the privilege of writing the foreword. For me, he’s an incredible person and I’ve been lucky to work in the same environment as him, even though we’ve never worked together.”
“I’m happy to live and drive in an era when Adrian Newey builds Formula 1 cars. I hope one day I can work with him. I’ll drive the Valkyrie and maybe I’ll already feel something when I get in the car, which will make me happy.”
