Lando Norris expressed surprise at securing a podium spot at the Australian GP, despite the challenge from Ferrari.
Lando Norris admitted to being surprised by finishing on the podium at the Australian Grand Prix. The McLaren F1 driver was unable to catch up with the Ferraris, even though he believed there was a moment in the race when Charles Leclerc was vulnerable, unlike Carlos Sainz.
“It was a great day for us, I’m very happy, proud of the team; we finished third and fourth, scoring a lot of points,” Norris stated. “Against Charles, I think our pace was slightly better, maybe we could have fought for second place.”
“However, Ferrari and Carlos did an excellent job, hats off to them, they were fast throughout the weekend. I felt good, was able to manage the tires, and it was a significant step forward. I didn’t expect to be on the podium, and I’m very pleased.”
While pleased with the result, the British driver tempered the enthusiasm by noting that Ferrari and Red Bull, even though he was more than 20 seconds ahead of Sergio Pérez before the neutralization, are still clearly superior to McLaren.
“It’s obvious that this circuit suits us a bit more, so we were able to attack and maintain a good speed. But Ferrari and Red Bull are still one or two steps ahead, so we need to catch up and close the gap. But it was a good day, thanks to McLaren, and it feels good to be back on the podium.”
