Alonso Silent on Red Bull, Mercedes F1 Rumors

21/03/2024

Fernando Alonso opts for silence amid the swirling transfer rumors involving Red Bull Racing and Mercedes F1, keeping his future plans under wraps.

Fernando Alonso, still performing at a high level, is considered a key player for next year’s transfers, potentially being a prime acquisition for Red Bull Racing if Max Verstappen were to move to Mercedes F1, or an ideal replacement for Lewis Hamilton at the same Mercedes team.

Additionally, he currently holds a highly coveted seat at Aston Martin F1, which could become sought-after if he decides to leave or retire.

Alonso was questioned about the possibility of joining Red Bull or Mercedes F1 next season given the significant developments described as ‘explosive’ at the reigning world champions.

“There’s nothing to comment on as anything I say now would only be based on speculation and rumors. I prefer not to comment.”

The speculation about Alonso’s future has been a hot topic during the early races, particularly after he cast doubt in Bahrain.

Alonso hinted he might consider retirement after the initial Grands Prix if he felt he lacked the necessary motivation to dedicate himself fully to the sport. He also expressed openness to joining a project that could quickly lead to victories. So, when does he expect to have more clarity on 2025?

“I believe it will be before the summer. At the car launch, I mentioned it would be after a few races, and now I find the same questions asked at every race.”

“If I say ‘summer,’ perhaps I’d like to go through a few races without any questions. I understand the rumors and find them flattering. But it’s the same as I’ve already said: I first need to decide what I feel. After that, I’ll see what possibilities exist. I won’t let others decide my fate.”

“My priority is to first speak with Aston Martin F1, as they gave me this opportunity two years ago. That’s the least I can do. If we feel happy with each other, it will be an easy choice. If we disagree, I’ll look elsewhere.”

Aston Martin F1: ‘A Good Weekend’ Ahead Despite Degradation?

Aston Martin F1 needs to make progress on Sundays, as its drivers explain. Fernando Alonso is pleased that the AMR24 meets expectations but hopes for some luck on Sunday to perform better than the car’s inherent capabilities.

“I think it’s good; we’re meeting our expectations. The performance differences between the 2023 and 2024 cars match what we saw in the simulator. It’s great to have this correlation, but we need to find more time,” the two-time world champion stated.

“This circuit has always been kind to me; I’ve always performed well in Melbourne, and there’s a lot of action on Sunday, safety cars, many things happening that offer a chance to score points. I’m optimistic; it should be a good weekend, and DRS might help too.”

Lance Stroll reveals that the Silverstone team will primarily focus on race performance, especially tire degradation, which has been costly for Aston Martin on Sundays.

“The car is good, fast on Saturdays. We have work to do on Sunday regarding degradation and such, but it’s better than expected,” Stroll remarked, expressing his fondness for Melbourne. “I like coming here; it’s a good circuit, and I’m hoping for a competitive weekend.”

“We have a car that’s good in fast corners, quick on a single lap. We need to work on degradation for the races, so that’s our focus this weekend. It seems to be related to the settings.”
