Following a thorough investigation, FIA President Mohammed Ben Sulayem is cleared of interference in two major incidents from the 2023 F1 season.
FIA President Mohammed Ben Sulayem has been exonerated following an independent investigation that found “no evidence of interference” on his part in the sport during two separate incidents reported after the 2023 F1 season.
The allegations suggested Ben Sulayem attempted to meddle in the results of the Saudi Arabian Grand Prix by overturning a penalty against Fernando Alonso, aiming for the Spaniard to regain his podium position. The sporting stewards eventually reversed their decision.
Another allegation against the FIA President claimed he sought to cancel the Las Vegas Grand Prix at the last minute by refusing to certify the circuit, alleging it was prepared too late, a stance he reaffirmed today.
The FIA Compliance Department, supported by external advisors, thus conducted an investigation.
In a statement from the FIA, it asserted that “the Ethics Committee was unanimous in its finding that there was no evidence to support allegations of any nature of interference involving the President.”
“Concerns regarding potential interference were brought to the attention of the FIA’s compliance officer and were subsequently referred to the FIA Ethics Committee under Article 32.2.5 of the FIA Statutes.”
“This was followed by a comprehensive and wide-ranging independent review lasting 30 days, which included interviews with 11 witnesses. The allegations against the FIA President were unfounded, and compelling evidence beyond reasonable doubt was presented to support the Ethics Committee of the FIA’s determination.”
“The FIA President was cleared of any wrongdoing relating to the allegations (i) of interfering with the sports stewards’ decision to cancel an additional penalty on car 14 following a dispute by the Aston Martin Aramco Cognizant F1 team at the 2023 Saudi Arabian Grand Prix and (ii) of attempting to interfere with the 2023 Las Vegas Grand Prix track certification process. The certification was completed and approved on time.”
