The FIA introduces stricter speed controls during F1 qualifying to enhance safety, setting maximum times and designated passing zones.
The FIA has announced new restrictions to prevent F1 qualifying sessions from endangering drivers when some of them drive very slowly on out-laps or in-laps to the pits. A maximum time between the two Safety Car lines had already been requested since last year.
In the race director’s notes, Niels Wittich, a new chapter is revealed, aimed at preventing accidents in cases where a driver is moving slowly. In addition to the maximum time, there will also be a pace to maintain between each marshal’s post, which will force drivers not to slow down too much.
If a driver violates this rule, they will be summoned as being outside the FIA rules, to see if a penalty will ensue: “Any driver exceeding the maximum time set by the FIA’s ECU may be considered as driving unnecessarily slowly.”
To avoid risks and facilitate fast laps, the race direction provides locations on the circuit where drivers can let faster cars that are catching up pass them.
“In the event of a rapid approach of cars, drivers will have to move off the line between turns 3 and 4, turns 10 and 11, and turns 13 and 14 to avoid any speed differential between the cars on the racing line.”
