Formula 1’s expansion in the USA continues, with the possible addition of the Chicago Grand Prix to its growing list of American races, following the success of other events.
In recent years, Formula 1 has made no secret of its desire to expand in the United States. There are now three American F1 races on the calendar, but there might be one more: the Chicago Grand Prix.
Boosted by the success of the Netflix series Drive to Survive, F1 has increased its presence in the United States in recent seasons. It already raced at the Circuit of the Americas in Austin. In 2022, F1 added the Miami GP and in 2023, Las Vegas was also added to the schedule.
However, it is quite possible that it won’t stop at three American races. Formula One Licensing BV, the Netherlands-based organization that is part of Formula One Holdings and responsible for registering trademarks and logos, recently filed an application for the following trademarks with the United States Patent and Trademark Office:
Trademark Application | Description |
---|---|
Grand Prix of Chicago | General name for the race |
Formula 1 Grand Prix of Chicago | Specific F1 race designation |
Chicago Grand Prix | Alternative general name |
Formula 1 Chicago Grand Prix | Alternate F1 race designation |
This could simply be a way to protect these names in case there is ever a GP in Chicago, as there is still no indication that the race will actually take place.
