Herbert: Russell Could Challenge Hamilton’s 8th Title

20/01/2024

Johnny Herbert sees George Russell as a potential barrier to Lewis Hamilton‘s quest for an eighth world title. Their 2023 performances indicate a tight competition within the Mercedes team.

Former F1 driver Johnny Herbert believes Lewis Hamilton’s attempt to win an eighth world championship could be thwarted by his Mercedes F1 teammate, George Russell.

Hamilton regained the upper hand over Russell in the 2023 season, particularly in races, which allowed him to finish five places ahead in the final drivers’ championship standings.

However, in qualifying, the two were evenly matched, with an 11-all tie.

Herbert, who won three F1 races in his career, believes Mercedes is still capable of producing a winning F1 car… but Hamilton will then have to brace himself for a big challenge from Russell.

“I still think there are enough smart people at Mercedes capable of producing an F1 car that can really win races and clinch another world championship, yes, absolutely.”

“Potentially, the person who will make things difficult if they get all the ingredients in the right order is George.”

“I think George will probably be the one who could make things more challenging to handle. He is more than capable of leading a team and has enough willpower and mental ability to absorb all the pressures that come with winning races and getting closer to a world championship.”

“And if he sees that he has an F1 car capable of winning the title, he won’t back down against Lewis. So, I think he could be the one who might stop the arrival of that record 8th title for Lewis.”

“Overall, Lewis still has the momentum for him, but George is a hungry wolf and he won’t back down.”
