Wolff: Hamilton’s Triumph at Silverstone No Fluke

08/07/2024

Wolff dismisses luck in Hamilton’s strategic win at Silverstone, signalling a robust comeback for Mercedes F1.

Toto Wolff was delighted to see his team, Mercedes F1, clinch a second victory in as many races, following Lewis Hamilton’s win at Silverstone. He praised the fact that this success was achieved through a strong race, not by mere chance.

“Last week’s victory in Austria was fortuitous. At Silverstone, we were quick in almost all conditions. We were leading for a long time, and even though the McLarens were fast in the rain, we managed to overtake them,” the Austrian stated.

“This is a well-deserved victory, and it shows the courage of this team. We never stopped believing, we never stopped working, and we were able to unleash the car’s potential. We are now on the right track.”

“George was unlucky. He has been very strong recently and secured a fantastic pole position on Saturday. Unfortunately, we had to retire his car due to a cooling issue. He could have probably contended for the victory without this.”

“What we have achieved is incredible”

Andrew Shovlin, the team’s trackside engineering director, also expressed his joy at seeing Hamilton return to winning ways, after two and a half years without a victory for the seven-time world champion.

“It was absolutely fantastic to see Lewis win. The English crowd makes it even more special, and it was an incredible race. It’s barely believable that it has been so long since we won a race with Lewis and now, we have won two weekends in a row as a team.”

“The race was tough for George. We were monitoring the cooling system of his car from the early laps and unfortunately, it reached a stage where we had to retire the car. However, he can hold his head high. He performed a fantastic lap to take pole position and showed he had the pace to control the race in the first stint.”

Shovlin also praised the entire team for the work done since the start of the year: “These past months have seen the whole team working tirelessly to improve the car. What we have accomplished in a short time is incredible.”

“We are going to enjoy this moment because it’s very special, but with two races to go before the summer break, we will continue to fight to enhance our performance while getting our championship campaign back on track.”
