Bayer shares details of Tsunoda’s apology for his use of a controversial word in a private talk.
Yuki Tsunoda crossed the boundaries of acceptability this weekend in Austria by using the English word “retard,” which translates to “retarded.” A slip-up for which he was fined 40,000 euros after being summoned by the commissioners. Peter Bayer, CEO of RB F1, regrets that radio communications are generally ruder.
“I sometimes have some capacity on the pit wall to listen to other drivers,” Bayer explains. “I don’t know why, I don’t know if it’s the very consistent and consistently applied communications. We hear so many ‘F words’ over a weekend, which seems to be acceptable now.”
Tsunoda told the commissioners he was unaware of the severity of the word used, as he is not a native English speaker. Bayer confirms having seen this version in private when he addressed the issue with his driver: “What Yuki said on Saturday, I told him when I saw him on his return, I told him ‘Yuki, you don’t say that.'”
“He looked at me and said, ‘Why, what do you mean?’ I said ‘John [Noonan, Tsunoda’s physio], you’re a native speaker, can you explain to Yuki what he said?’ He did, and Yuki told me ‘Oh no, I’m really sorry.’ He really was.”
Bayer praises Tsunoda’s work on his maturity and how he better controls his moments of nervousness on the radio: “He has improved 1000% in this regard. The indignation he felt is gone because he understood.”
“He understood that every ‘F word’ cost him a tenth. Daniel [Ricciardo] was 15 milliseconds from Q3, it’s so tight, and these distractions are… they cost you a tenth. And that tenth decides between finishing ninth or 13th. Yuki knows it and he manages to do it.”
