Max Verstappen selects the top five F1 drivers, a compelling choice by the racing icon.

During an interview, Max Verstappen was asked to name his top 5 F1 drivers of all time. The Red Bull driver is not a big fan of rankings and is aware that his answer could be interpreted in various ways, but he participated nonetheless.

“I know what happens, because whatever I say, there will be people commenting and disagreeing. It’s a tough question,” Verstappen told DAZN. “I would choose Michael [Schumacher], probably also Ayrton [Senna], Fernando [Alonso], Lewis [Hamilton], and [Juan Manuel] Fangio. The familiar names.”

Fernando Alonso’s inclusion is the most surprising, the Spaniard having won two world titles, and the Dutchman justified his choice: “I think Fernando always shows himself as he is. That’s something I greatly admire. He has been very successful yet remains passionate about racing.”

“He’s a normal, likable guy, and I appreciate that. He’s also usually very happy when another driver succeeds. I think he was the first Spanish F1 driver to make the sport known in Spain. He also became a world champion. For me, it’s a bit the same in the Netherlands.”

“He loves racing and I love racing. He’s even a bit stronger than me, because at his age, he is still in F1. I have a lot of respect for him. I remember following him in F1 when I was still karting. For him, I would turn on the TV because I knew he was going to have a good race.”

Asked which driver now might have the chance to pursue an F1 title, Verstappen named Charles Leclerc to start: “There are several to think about. But just one… I’d say Charles. But I could choose others.” Pressed to give a second name, he chose Lando Norris.
