Mercedes F1 showcased promising speed in Miami, with Wolff and the team drawing positives from mixed results.
Mercedes F1 emerged as the fourth strongest team this Sunday in Miami, securing sixth place with Lewis Hamilton and eighth with George Russell. However, the team contended with both a Haas and an RB F1. Nonetheless, Toto Wolff, the team director, is pleased to see his team competing on track, and a Mercedes engine prevailing with Lando Norris’s McLaren.
“First off, congratulations to McLaren, Zak, Andrea, and Lando. He has been awaiting his first victory for a long time and he drove a very solid race. He has deserved it for a while; it’s good for F1, good for the sport. McLaren has been on a significant upward trajectory since last year, and it’s great to see. It demonstrates what’s possible,” noted Wolff.
“Congratulations also to everyone involved in designing, manufacturing, and operating the Mercedes power unit at High Performance Powertrains in Brixworth.”
“The good news from our race is that, on medium tires, we showed that we had good speed. Lewis was faster than Perez in the Red Bull ahead on the same compound but wasn’t quite able to overtake him.”
“George struggled a bit more on the hard tires, but overall, it was encouraging to see the improvements we’ve made since Friday and that we had solid pace compared to others.”
A More ‘Frustrating’ Race for Russell
Andrew Shovlin, the team’s trackside engineering director, also praised McLaren. Regarding his team’s race, he confirmed the promising performances on medium tires and the struggles on hard tires.
“First off, congratulations to Lando and McLaren. It was a very impressive performance by both the team and the driver. They did an excellent job and fully deserve the win. We know we have work to do to catch up, but it is encouraging to see how much they have progressed in just 12 months.”
“Our race was relatively straightforward. We knew it was going to be tough to make progress, our car didn’t perform well on this track, and we particularly struggled in the slower corners. Lewis had a difficult stint on hard tires, but after the restart, he was much more satisfied with the car on mediums.”
“Unfortunately, we didn’t have the straight-line speed needed to overtake Perez, but it was good to be able to fight with him till the end. It was a frustrating afternoon for George. He slid a lot and struggled to get his tires to grip. We’ll be reflecting on this in the coming days.”
“Our goal is, of course, to make the car faster. We have some good developments in preparation and we will do everything possible to get them on the car as soon as we can.”
