Zhou Weathers Tough Conditions at Montreal GP

Bottas Optimistic in Montreal, Eyes Monaco Redemption

08/06/2024

In Montreal, Valtteri Bottas sees a rebound from Monaco’s lows, while Zhou faces trials amid unpredictable weather.

Stake F1 believes they have avoided the worst in terms of settings and performance in Montreal. Valtteri Bottas is confident that the Sauber C44 will perform better this weekend than it did in Monaco and he remains optimistic.

“It seems we are in a better position than in Monaco, which is obviously encouraging for the upcoming weekend. Today’s rain affected both sessions, meaning each time we took to the track, it was under different conditions and with different tyres: this made it more difficult to get a detailed read on the car’s behaviour and performance.”

“Nevertheless, the feel with the car is positive, and we managed a decent number of laps during FP2, gathering important data for us and the team in Hinwil, which we can work on overnight. With variable weather predictions, it will be crucial to fully trust the car tomorrow during qualifying, pushing it to the limit regardless of the conditions.”

Guanyu Zhou had a more challenging day with a crash during the first session. The Chinese driver is relieved not to have caused too much damage and praises his team for enabling him to drive in all conditions.

“It’s great to be back racing in Montreal, even though the day was tough for everyone. During FP1, I expected a bit more grip on the wet track, but I aquaplaned and was fortunate to save my car just before hitting the wall – thus, we managed to minimise the damage.”

“The team did an excellent job preparing the car for FP2, which allowed us to run in both dry and wet conditions. Given the mixed conditions, it’s hard to tell where we stand, but the car feels significantly better than in Monaco. I’m looking forward to tomorrow’s races.”
