Mercedes F1 hints at recruiting Adrian Newey while maintaining realistic expectations. Wolff expresses satisfaction with the team’s ongoing progress.

Toto Wolff acknowledges that Mercedes F1 does not dismiss the idea of recruiting Adrian Newey. The designer has left Red Bull and is still contemplating his future, occasionally linked with Ferrari or Aston Martin. However, the Austrian reveals that Mercedes does not exclude the possibility of trying to bring him on board, without making it an absolute priority.

“No team can disregard Adrian,” Wolff asserts. “But he needs to fit into the organization and want to be part of it. That’s why I believe it’s always important to look at opportunities. It’s not as though we are currently waiting for a messiah.”

Mercedes has faced two and a half challenging years, and Wolff outlines the human errors behind the technical faults: “Formula 1 is a matter of physics. An engineer would say ‘it’s simple, change the physics of the car.’ But the truth is that humans make decisions.”

“I think some of the decisions we made were partly wrong in 2021. We have addressed them. We changed the structure—some people left, others joined the group. We have been diligent in organizing our meetings. That’s the main reason we’ve made a step forward.”

He adds that the tough days are very beneficial for teams: “The days you lose are the ones your competitors regret because those are the days you learn the most. It was sometimes difficult, but it was vital for developing the team for the next phase.”
