Wolff Open to Vettel’s F1 Return

Toto Wolff hints at Sebastian Vettel’s potential return to Formula 1, stirring speculation about a Mercedes seat.

Mercedes F1 Team Principal Toto Wolff has stated that Sebastian Vettel is “someone you can never overlook” amid rumors suggesting he is looking to make a Formula 1 comeback.

The four-time world champion has not denied in recent weeks the notion of returning to a Formula 1 cockpit in the future is on his mind.

Vettel has emerged as a potential candidate to join Mercedes as a replacement for Lewis Hamilton next year when the British driver moves to Ferrari. Both Hamilton and Russell have given their blessing to this scenario.

When asked if Mercedes is considering Vettel for next year, Wolff told the press: “Sebastian is someone you can never overlook.”

“I think his track record is phenomenal and sometimes, taking a break might also be a good thing to reassess what’s important to you and sharpen your motivation.”

“As I’ve said before, we haven’t made any decision yet and it’s not something we plan to do in the coming weeks.”

How has he felt about Vettel in their conversations?

“We talk a lot with Sebastian. It’s good to sometimes take a year or two off. He’s interested in talking about a comeback but not yet about making a decision. It’s definitely something that’s on his mind.”

Wolff confirmed that he has narrowed down the contenders to a final list, but declined to disclose how many drivers are in consideration.

Apart from Vettel, Max Verstappen, Fernando Alonso, and Carlos Sainz have been identified as possibilities, along with Mercedes junior driver Kimi Antonelli. Wolff reiterated that Mercedes is taking its time to make a decision as it evaluates its strongest option.

“I know the driver market is very dynamic,” he said.

“Max is the benchmark, he’s on everyone’s list.”

“Some of the very good guys are about to sign for some of the other teams and we want to continue having these discussions and keep our options open.”

“But at this stage, I think it’s far too early for us to commit to a driver, whether they’re very young or very experienced.”

“The next few months will give us more clues.”
