Mercedes aim to capitalise on their one-lap strength in Monaco, hoping strong qualifying can erase memories of Imola’s disappointing pace.
Team principal Toto Wolff is counting on the W16’s raw pace over a single lap to secure a strong qualifying position on the streets of the Principality.
While Imola’s disappointing race pace certainly needs to be understood and analyzed, it will be less critical this weekend, as overtaking is virtually impossible in Monaco. What remains to be seen is whether the mandatory two-stop strategy (in dry conditions) will change the running order in any meaningful way.
“After a tough race in Italy, we have the opportunity to bounce back immediately in Monaco. We will work hard, quickly and efficiently to understand what caused our limitations in Imola. It is important to get on top of that to avoid a repeat,” explained the Austrian, who was not present at the last Grand Prix.
“However, we know Monaco is a very different challenge. Qualifying is absolutely crucial and has been a strong point for us this year. That is encouraging, but it means nothing if we are not delivering on track. We have seen how competitive Saturdays have been this year, and it is always even more intense in Monaco.”
“We will need to be at our very best to give ourselves a chance to fight for a good result on Sunday. The two mandatory pit stops will also add another dimension to the race. We are looking forward to taking on that challenge and getting back out on track.”
