Verstappen Pledges Loyalty to Team Despite RB20 Woes

Verstappen Responds to Wolff and Clarifies His Position

27/06/2024

Verstappen dismisses departure rumours, pledging to stay even if the RB20 falls behind in the race.

Last week, Max Verstappen’s future once again sparked considerable speculation.

Toto Wolff told reporters after the Spanish Grand Prix that no decision had yet been made on who would drive alongside George Russell for Mercedes next season.

Before the race weekend in Austria, arriving 15 minutes late to the day’s official press conference, Verstappen himself responded to the ongoing media pressure exerted by Wolff.

“I think I’ve already said it. Of course, people talk, but what’s most important is that we have a very competitive car for the future. At the moment, it’s obviously very tight, but we are working very well as a team to try to improve further. I’ve already discussed this with the team; we are working and also focusing on next year to try to be competitive again.”

Pressed to be “more explicit,” Verstappen was asked about the possibility of leaving if his RB20 proved to be no longer the fastest car by the end of the season.

“I don’t think that’s how Formula 1 works, where you could suddenly say ‘well, goodbye guys.’ That’s not how it works. I have a long contract with the team, I’m very happy where I am, and as I’ve said, we’re also already focusing on next year with things we can implement on the car.”

“I suppose that should say enough about where I’ll be driving next year.”
“Didn’t you get that from my previous response? Ok, alright, then yes, that’s what I meant. We are already working on next year’s car. I think when you are very focused on that, it means you will also be driving for this team.”
