F1’s 2025 season could see major moves with Schumacher heading to Alpine and Ocon to Williams amid growing speculation.
A return to the Formula 1 grid for former Haas F1 driver Mick Schumacher is becoming a real possibility.
Since losing his seat at the end of 2022, the 25-year-old son of F1 legend Michael Schumacher has shared his duties as a test and reserve driver at Mercedes, with a return to racing in the 2024 World Endurance Championship with Alpine. He will participate in the 24 Hours of Le Mans for the first time in a month.
Asked about persistent new rumors positioning him as a favorite for one of the two Alpine F1 seats for 2025 during the last round of the WEC at Spa-Francorchamps this weekend, the German stated, “I am monitoring the situation and cannot say more. It remains my goal to return to Formula 1.”
Before heading to Spa, Schumacher was at Silverstone where he shared a 2022 Mercedes with Toto Wolff’s young protégé, Kimi Antonelli.
He reportedly covered more than a Grand Prix distance, but Mercedes keeps all lap times confidential.
Schumacher’s best hope for a 2025 return seems to be with Alpine, where he has now established a solid relationship with team principal Bruno Famin.
Overseeing Alpine’s current performance crisis in F1, Famin faces the prospect of losing both drivers, Esteban Ocon and Pierre Gasly, who are highly sought after in the paddock.
Wolff, who manages both 17-year-old Antonelli and Esteban Ocon’s career, is pushing for Ocon to move to Williams Mercedes for 2025 and beyond. The Frenchman also remains on his list of potential candidates to partner George Russell if Max Verstappen does not leave Red Bull.
This would open a seat at Alpine, although it is noteworthy that Jack Doohan is also a contender for next season.
Alpine F1 may offer Schumacher a test in a 2022 Formula 1 car in the coming weeks to gauge the German’s performance in a car they are thoroughly familiar with.
Renault CEO Luca de Meo also wishes that, if up to par, Schumacher joins Alpine’s F1 program “for marketing reasons,” given the significant importance of the German automotive market to the French brand.
