Ralf Schumacher sees a chance for Mick to fill Hamilton’s coveted Mercedes seat, amid a narrow field of contenders.
Ralf Schumacher believes his nephew Mick has a chance to take over Lewis Hamilton’s seat at Mercedes F1. He thinks the vacant seat won’t attract a large pool of candidates, potentially benefiting the former Haas driver, now a reserve at Brackley.
“There won’t be as many candidates,” Schumacher stated. “The question is what Toto Wolff wants to do. Russell, if he makes no mistake, is certainly capable of following in Lewis’s footsteps and leading the team.”
“The question now is whether to opt for experience or bring in new talent. Mick would definitely be one of the best options among the younger drivers, but of course, there’s also Carlos Sainz on the market, though I think he’s more likely to end up at Audi.”
“I think Mick’s chances are good and he deserves this opportunity. Alongside Russell, he would be a man to develop for the future. I’m quite confident about this, it’s now down to Toto Wolff to agree. But so far, I’ve only heard positive things from him about Mick.”
Schumacher expressed surprise at Hamilton’s signing with Ferrari, but found it logical: “It was initially surprising, but then understandable.”
“Lewis really wants to win and I think he’s lost some confidence in Mercedes’ team and structure over the last two years. These two years have been challenging. It’s also important not to underestimate the long and well-known connection with Fred Vasseur, and I’m sure he promised him everything he wanted.”
