Sainz Laments ‘Worst Weekend’ at Imola

19/05/2024

Carlos Sainz expressed frustration after his “worst weekend” at Imola, finishing fifth. The Ferrari driver aims to fix issues before Monaco.

Carlos Sainz finished fifth at the Emilia-Romagna GP in Imola, and the Ferrari driver expressed significant frustration. He explained that he faced several unresolved issues which cost him time during the race.

“It was a very tricky race for me personally. After qualifying, we identified some problems that held us back a bit, and it wasn’t an easy race. It’s frustrating because we were at home, and we want to have our best weekend here, not the worst of the season. But we faced difficulties, and we need to ensure we fix them for Monaco,” noted Sainz.

When asked about the reasons for his lack of pace, he explained that the issues are identified but couldn’t be discussed: “It’s not related to the setup; it’s about various factors, but in F1, we can’t always comment on everything.”

After holding off Oscar Piastri early in the race, Sainz suffered an undercut which he believes could have been avoided: “It’s a question mark whether we should have defended against Piastri. The pace was close, and we could have finished ahead. We tried to extend the stint to get lucky, but I only managed to extend it by three laps, so it didn’t really work.”

Looking ahead to the next race in Monaco, Sainz hopes to solve the qualifying issues: “I think in Monaco, as always, it will be decided in qualifying. We need to analyze how to improve performance in qualifying. It’s clear that in the race, Charles wasn’t far from the McLarens and Red Bulls. If we start ahead, it’s a whole different story.”

The Spaniard concluded by acknowledging his desire to perform better for the Italian fans and hopes to make up for it in Monza: “This was my penultimate race in Italy as a Ferrari driver, and I wanted to do better. I still have Monza left, and I’ve had some great races there in the past, and I’m looking forward to it.”
