Russell's Thrilling Drive in Century-Old Mercedes

George Russell described driving a century-old Mercedes as “extraordinary,” celebrating a historic Targa Florio win and receiving the Trofeo Bandini Award in Brisighella.

George Russell received the Lorenzo Bandini Trophy this Wednesday in Italy. To collect his trophy in the town of Brisighella, the Mercedes F1 driver drove a car from the brand that won the legendary Targa Florio in 1924, exactly a century ago. Starting from Faenza, he recounted the epic journey and reflected on the brand’s history in motorsport.

“Mercedes-Benz has an incredible history in motorsport,” commented Russell. “Since joining the team in 2017, I’ve enjoyed learning more about it, especially by visiting the museum and the ‘Holy Halls’ in Stuttgart.”

“When the opportunity arose to drive one of the most iconic cars in the company’s history, I seized it. Driving such an extraordinary vehicle, not only to celebrate such an important victory in Mercedes-Benz’s history but also en route to receive the Trofeo Bandini Award, made it even more special.”

The model was recently restored by the Mercedes-Benz Classic department: “It’s incredible to be behind the wheel of a century-old Mercedes. It’s a car you’d expect to see in a museum to be admired, rather than driven. So, it’s a true honor to be entrusted with its first public outing since its restoration.”

“Driving the car was exceptional! The sound was fantastic, and the handling in the corners, given the narrow tires, was very impressive. It was a real joy to have the chance to drive it, and I would like to warmly thank the Mercedes-Benz Classic team.”
