In a tense Australian GP finale, George Russell’s bid to overtake Fernando Alonso led to a dramatic, yet less severe, incident.

George Russell, finishing 7th on the final lap of the Australian Grand Prix, made an error with his Mercedes F1 in an attempt to overtake Fernando Alonso ahead of him.

The British driver retired, his car off the track, in an incident that ultimately appeared less dramatic than initial images suggested.

Immediately afterwards, he gave his initial reaction, questioning if Alonso might have experienced a problem just in front of him.

“I believe I went off track, and that’s on me. I was half a second behind Fernando, 100 meters before the turn, then suddenly, he approached me extremely fast, and I was right on his gearbox. I’m not sure if he had an issue or not.”

“He’s gone to see the stewards, and it’s somewhat odd under circumstances like these. I’ve nothing more to say at this point. I need to review everything, just disappointed to end the race this way.”

“It’s clear he braked 100 meters before the turn, then accelerated again and took the turn normally. We’ve already seen the data.”

As to whether Alonso was testing him on the brakes, Russell refrains from making accusations without evidence.

“I won’t accuse him of anything before seeing more. I was just behind him for many laps. I was half a second behind him before the turn.”

“Then, all of a sudden, he slowed down significantly and accelerated again. I didn’t expect it, and it caught me off guard. That part is my fault. It’s interesting that he was called by the stewards. I’m eager to find out what’s going on. They’ll tell us.”
