Relief Not Celebration Lawson Eyes F1 Challenges

Lawson Relieved, Skips Celebration After Promotion

27/09/2024

Liam Lawson felt ‘relieved’ over his new role, opting out of celebrations, a sentiment echoed by his close associates.

RB F1 pilot Liam Lawson, confirmed for the season’s end over Daniel Ricciardo, joked that he hadn’t “really” celebrated his promotion news, with relief being the predominant feeling among his family and friends, along with an awareness of the challenge ahead.

Lawson will now compete in the season’s last six Grands Prix, starting in the United States from October 18-20, with three sprint races also on the schedule.

Despite F1 enjoying an “autumn break” due to the extended gap between the Singapore and Austin rounds, Lawson admits he hasn’t “really” had time to celebrate the news he received two weeks ago, and won’t have time in the near future either.

“Obviously, I’m very happy, but there are six races left in the season, and I’m coming in at a tough time. It will be very difficult. All these drivers have been through three-quarters of a season now, so I have to try to compete with that—on tracks I haven’t yet driven on.”

“It will be a challenge. I’ve spoken to my parents, of course, and everyone who has supported me on this journey. It’s very, very special, but we don’t have much time to really celebrate or reflect—we need to get straight to work.”

“It’s funny, because when I found out the news and was able to call everyone, the first words or things they said, all of them, including my dad, my mom, and everyone, all the sponsors who have supported me from day one, I could hear relief in their voice before anything else.”

“It wasn’t excitement, it was just pure relief, which I felt too, to be honest, because it has obviously been a huge journey and a lot of people have put in a lot of effort, so it was very exciting.”

Note that RB F1 has confirmed that Lawson will start with a tough stint in Austin with a 10-place grid penalty! He inherits Ricciardo’s engine pool, and his car was reaching the end of its quota. A new engine will thus be installed in his car.
