As Formula 1 returns to China, RB F1’s Yuki Tsunoda aims for points despite challenges at the Shanghai circuit, where Daniel Ricciardo eagerly anticipates racing again.
RB F1 drivers experience Shanghai circuit differently as Formula 1 returns to China this weekend. Daniel Ricciardo, the 2018 winner in the country, is excited to revisit a track he enjoys greatly.
“I’m really looking forward to going back to Shanghai. It’s been five years since we raced there, so selfishly I want to get back on a circuit I like,” said the Australian driver.
“But I’m also sure the Chinese fans are eager to see F1 again, Zhou mentioned it was sold out, so the atmosphere will be great. Our first Sprint weekend brings some challenges but also opportunities, I’m just ready to get back in the car!”
Meanwhile, Yuki Tsunoda will be exploring the Shanghai International Circuit for the first time, and he knows he has his work cut out with just one free practice session. However, the Japanese driver is relying on his positive momentum: “I’m very excited about participating in the China Grand Prix, as it’s my first time at this circuit.”
“I’ve never been here, and it’s a Sprint format too, so it will definitely be a challenge. At the same time, we’ve had two good races so far, we’re in good shape, so we’ll make the most of it. I’m confident and aiming for points and Q3.”
“The circuit seems very unique, I would say. Turns 1 and 2 in particular, a kind of long right turn then a change to a left turn, so obviously tire management will be key to the race. We have a good car, so we’ll make it work. I’m looking forward to seeing the Chinese fans and everyone at the circuit. Thank you!”
Alan Permane, the competition director, is pleased that F1 is returning to China, and he describes the challenges for the team and its drivers: “Visa Cash App RB is eager to see Formula 1 return to Shanghai for the first time since 2019 and will look to continue its momentum.”
“This weekend will present a unique challenge, the first time we visit with this generation of cars, but also a Sprint weekend and Yuki’s first time in Shanghai.”
“We will need to be very quick during Free Practice 1, with only one hour of running before the Sprint qualifying session. Both drivers have spent time preparing in our simulator and are ready for the weekend.”
